Europe 2012: Day 09 (Iceland 09): Oct 26

26-Oct-12

Exploring Mývatn Lake area.

We stop by a ‘hidden treasure’ Grjotagja, a small cave with a geothermal pool that is supposed to be comfortable to bathe in. We were told by an employee at the Vogafjos that locals occasionally go there and skinny dip and it should be around 43˚C but the above link says it’s now too hot (since 1984. hm)

Dimmuborgir, a conservation park, that holds several interesting rock formations, primarily large holes formed by volcanic activity.

Höfði Peninsula, a rocky promontory which is supposed to be a ‘romantic’ spot… maybe if it were summer.

Skutustadir, a collection of pseudocraters formed by molten lava flowing into the lake. Like several other areas, occupied by sheep and their several droppings.

Next, Godafoss Waterfall. It’s name is said to be derived by a historical event by a chieftain deciding for the Icelandic people to adopt Christianity. He then therefore threw all of his statues of the pagan gods into this waterfall. Again, really really cold and windy.

Akureyri, another town with some shopping and food.

Some drive away was where we’ll be staying the night, a small hostel by the Hrútafjörður fjord. Heading back to Reykjavik tomorrow as our journey around the Golden Circle ends and our trip in Iceland comes to a close…

Lotsa driving again~

SO COLD. Hit -15˚C this morning by the waterfall, Dettifoss, which is Europe’s most powerfull waterfall. Very cold and very dangerous, whee… and also down to Hafragilsfoss for a higher view.

Hit up Ásbyrgis next, a formation of the mountains formed by earthquakes, volcanoes, waterfalls, glaciers, etc. Interesting park. We walked to a waterfall that was completely frozen, spikes of ice just hanging down.

Quickly through Húsavík, grabbing some food along the way. Hannah was getting a little sick so we also visited the local Apótek, but apparently cough medicine is not over the counter, but requires a prescription. hmm. In Husavik is also a lot of ships that go out for Whale Watching. Although we were not going to go anyways, their tours end Oct 20th. Several tours around the island also stop departing around the end of September. No, we did not eat whale.

In the area of the Myvatn Lake, we went to the Viti Crater. Passed by several small natural geysers, and a ‘cloud machine’, Krafla Geothermal Power Station along the way up to the crater. There is a trail that leads up and around the crater and the small geysers (if they are small geysers) in a valley around the back of the crater with waters from 80-100˚C. Got separated from the three of them as I went exploring. Oops 😛 The smoke from the factory was so thick that the sunset lit it up to a bright orangey-pink.

Staying at Vogafjós Guesthouse, a cow farm. The night started out quite cloudless and clear but got cloudy, destroying any chances of seeing the northern lights once again. *sigh..

And our last stop for the day, Myvatn Nature Baths, soaking ourselves in natural geothermal pools.

24-Oct-12

Back to Jökulsárlón! Started off a little foggy and cleared up during our boat tour through the lagoon. Sneaky seals popped their head up once or twice. Overall a great experience. The mist was lifting and creating a mysterious aura~ haha… The reflection of the mountains and ice on the water, beautiful. But it got even better when we ended the tour and the stream leading out of the lagoon cleared up as well and the whole scene was completely different. Breathtaking. Clear waters, crazy glacier pieces, thin layer of mist, and snow-covered peaks in the background. Very much worth coming back to this point 3 times. hahah…

AAAAAND a long drive to our next stop, Egilsstaðir. Made a few quick stops along the way to take pictures. Highway 1 led us through incredibly scenic routes along the cliffs, through the mountains, into forests.

and now it’s snowing. 11:32pm.

SO DAMN FOGGY. Was an interesting drive in the morning to get to our first destination: Skaftafell for a Glacier Hike. The fog was dark, then white, and all over the place, and then gone and back again.. haha. Very nice scenic route, like every route we’ve taken actually.

So after about 2 hours of driving, we arrive at Skaftafell Visitor Centre. Apparently the bus we passed by a couple of minutes prior was the one we should have been on. *sigh… we were late. Next hike, 2pm. So let’s skip to the next destination: Jökulsárlón lagoon for a tour through the glaciers, 45 minute drive away. However, it is still really damn foggy. We opted to come back the next morning, couldn’t get any worse in terms of fogginess. But of course, stayed for a bit to take photos of what we could.

Ugh. Back towards Skaftafell. Made a couple small stops along the way and got to our hike on time 😛

Fitting our crampons and getting our ice picks, we head out to Svinafellsjokull, a glacier tongue of the Vatnajökull glacier. Pretty fun to be running around on crampons on a glacier. Also a bit dangerous. Several deep crevasses are around limiting how far we can go and what direction. A fall down there could be some serious trouble. Overall, a fun and even a little educational time on the glacier. Thanks to MountainGuides.is, Siggi.

By this time, it was getting really dark. We headed out to the lagoon again (it was on our way anyways) and was glad to see that the fog cleared up and we might be able to get some different pictures. Yay. Back on the road, it got darker, foggier, and started to rain… on our way to Hofn.

Grabbed dinner at Kaffi Hornid, Glacier Trout and Apple + Caramel Pie, mmm……. sleep.

Tomorrow, back to Jökulsárlón and back north to some waterfalls and such.

Golden Circle Day Two.

Before leaving Hestheimar, we visited the stables they had and saw some horses.

Seljalandsfoss. First stop of the day, a waterfall where we were able to walk behind! Pretty cool and cold… I got too close, sank my shoes in mud, had to go and change. Oops. 😛 Also, my camera got so fogged up I couldn’t take any photos until the end of the day – -;… Therefore I can’t remember where we went. Let’s see…

Gljufrafoss.

Then it started to rain and apparently most restaurants during the weekdays are closed at these random tourist spots along the circle. Especially since it’s low season. What do these people do with themselves? Farm, I guess…

Off towards Vik, towards our guesthouse for the night in Vellir. No one around. Back on the road!

Dyrhólaey, a small peninsula close to Vik. Consisting of three spots to stop on a black-sand beach. I wish I had a container or something :(. Still pretty cool in the rain though.

Vellir.

Tomorrow, Glacier Hike!

22-Oct-12

Day One traversing the Golden Circle.

Basically it’s a lot of scenery and landscapes. Ice, lakes, waterfalls, geysers, etc. Unfortunately we didn’t really learn too much about each spot. I just hope I can remember the names.

Pingvellir National Park, World Heritage site. Two waterfalls, lakes. The first waterfall, Drekkingarhylur, (according to the info panel) some Icelandic executions were by drowning. Several places were named after savage penalties. Stekkjargia gorge are Galgaklettar (Scaffold Cliff) and Galgi (Scaffold) for example. The second waterfall, Öxarárfoss, was just very nice 😛

Geysir, very touristy, restaurant, gift shop, clothing stores, food court, museum. Basically a park with a lot of geysers. Strokkur, was the main attraction as it actually bursts/erupts? regularly.

Gullfoss, a large waterfall. Lots of ice and lots of cold cold water. Probably some story about how it could have been sold or something and wasn’t… yea.

Kerio, a collapsed volcano.

We’re staying at a nice cottage at Hestheimar, cozy.

Tomorrow, continuing the circle.

20-Oct-12

Late start for me as Karen and Michelle went to go pick up Hannah from the airport. 😛 After Hannah got settled and napped for a bit, we headed out to explore Reykjavik. First stop: Kringlan. A mall. Hah, to grab some ISK and a SIM card for emergencies. Everything so far seems very expensive…

Next: ‘The Pearl’ or, Perlan to take some photos and look at the view. Inside also held ‘The Saga Museum’ that explains the Icelandic sagas and history… we did not go in. 😛

Back into the downtown, we visited the Harpa Concert Hall, very cool looking building. Close to our next destination, the Kolaportið Flea Market and the Bæjarins Beztu hot dog stand. Surprisingly good hot dogs, but not very filling, should have got more. The condiments really made the hot dog great. The flea market… was not for me. haha. They also have street washroom closets, that you must pay for… interesting. Quickly moving on, we head into the streets and browse the various shops and try to do some souvenir shopping.

Apparently, there was a scavenger hunt going on within a college or something where several groups of 5 guys go around and take pictures of themselves doing something. And one of them seemed to be, lift a tourist… haha. The first group, wearing pink, seemed to be following us through the city. As we went to take a look at ‘The Hallgrímskirkja’ church which was very close to our hostel and across from Kaffi Loki. Beautiful building. Upstairs, showing the landscape of the city. Quite different from what you would expect to see in Toronto for sure. Off towards another spot, The Sun Voyager (Icelandic: Sólfar).

And finally, dinner. Hofnin. Very good meal, stuffed. I got the set menu of Shellfish Soup (Skelfisksüpa), Grilled Lamb Prime, and Spiced Carrot Cake (Gulrót). Yum… and back to Harpa for some night shots of their crazy building and then back to Kaffi Loki for some dessert 😛

Tomorrow, starting Golden Circle heading south.

19-Oct-12

After sleeping about 4 hours I couldn’t sleep anymore. Woke up around 9 EST, 1am whatever our current timezone is… And back to sleep to wake up for 8ish.

So our excursion this morning was to hike within the Snæfellsjokull National Park. We picked out a couple hiking trails and went on our way. Heh, I’m not sure what else I can say about them… It was a good hike, nice scenic views and a cool waterfall. From one angle the mountain top looked like a natural coliseum or castle top and the frozen waterfall created the moat. Refreshing. Hiked to Rauðhóll, Klukkufoss waterfall, and.. around.

After walking, jumping, and hiking for about 4 hours it was time to go! Back to Reykjavik. 3 hour drive… Ugh. Apparently the underground tunnel we drove through yesterday is actually going underwater… According to Karen. Aaaaaaaand then I got a ticket. Speeding. *sigh… Clocked at 118 on these stupid empty roads marked 90. I guess that’s fine. I was going 134 earlier that ride. Oops? Yea. Expensive. Don’t speed in Iceland. Was cheaper speeding in New Zealand. At least I was able to pay immediately and saved 25% – -;… Ugh. Wanna guess how much? 37,500kr with the ‘discount’ from 50,000kr. *sigh

Back through the underwater tunnel. Everyone’s awake this time. 6km.

Arrived at the hostel around 6, “Our house”. Interesting decor. Dinner time! Headed to Kaffi Loki, named after the Nordic god, close to our hostel. Nice place w good photos for their menu 😛 Trying some Icelandic dishes, sheep-head jelly, shark meat, rye bread ice cream… Not bad. Meh.. The shark meat tasted quite familiar. Strong aftertaste. The rye bread ice cream was pretty good though.

Walked around a bit afterwards, found some random Asian food places. Noodle bar, sushi, Vietnamese… Hm. Ended up in a small dessert place and had some hot Nutella chocolate 🙂

Tomorrow Hannah will be joining us and we will be exploring the city during the day… I think. We’ll see.

Klukkufoss Waterfall’s freezing water, Hreggnasi (Klukkufoss flowing around it), somewhere around Klukkofoss and Hreggnasi (can you see Michelle and Karen :P?), Sunset driving back to Reykjavik, Rye Bread Ice Cream

18-Oct-12

9pm flight out. YYZ -> KEF. Icelandair.

Economy Comfort, thank you TD Travel Rewards :)… Pre boarding, empty middle seat, complementary meal. Yay. Too bad my media screen didn’t work :@

Very efficient, all they asked me at Customs was if I was staying in Iceland and how long… and the walk to the baggage claim was lengthy, but my bag was out in 5 minutes. Karen and Michelle were about 10 rows behind me so……. Still waiting. Lalala.

Grabbed the Hertz station wagon (Skoda Octavia) and went on our way… Pitstop to IKEA, which was closed 🙁 no meatballs for us today. And off to our hostel far far away in Grundarfjördur within the Snæfellsnes region. Which was about a 3 hour drive from Reykjavik airport. Karen and Michelle quietly sleeping as I drive around in narrow lanes not really knowing where I’m going on deserted highways throughout the countryside at 100+km/hr. There was a 5 minute tunnel which was quite interesting and dark.

Anyways, back in Grundarfjördur, stopped and grabbed some burgers at Kaffi 59 and swung by the hostel reception hoping to check in. Nope. Too early, no one is around. Back on the road we go! Switched out with Karen cause I was falling asleep at the wheel >_>… Lalala

Driving through the small villages along the way we grab some snacks from a supermarket, skyr.is Melon yogurt?! Hmmmm and continue on stopping whenever there is a pitstop area and something catches our eye.

Travelling along the 54, we hit 3 sight seeing spots. Cliffs and rock formations… Dufubjarg, Hellnar, Arnarstapi. At Arnarstapi, there was a rock sculpture, the deity of Mt. Snaefell, Barour Snæfellsnes. Took a picture of the info panel, maybe I’ll read it one day…

And to the hostel. Decent wifi. We are exhausted. Didn’t sleep too well on the flight so we’ve been running on about 3 hours of sleep. It’s now about 645 and the sun has set.

As expected a lot of scenery to take in and appreciate. The country roads are surprisingly very well maintained so far. Tomorrow we are hitting up the Snæfellsjökull National Park to do some crazy hiking, gonna freeze my ass off.

Europe 2011: Day 10 (Greece 08): May 22

23-May-11

As part of the ticket into the Acropolis, there are 5 or 6 other historical monuments that you are then able to enter, the temple and market places we passed yesterday during the walking tour. There is a cobble stone pathway that helps guide tourists. It goes from the Temple of Zeus all the way around the Acropolis.

So our first stop was the closest to us, Temple of Zeus and the Gates of Hadrian. Visiting some of these ruins without the historical background provided by a guide is sorta… Wasteful. But since we got some info the day before, it was easier to decide which ones to look at closer and which ones to keep walking by.

Making our way to Syntagma Square for the changing of the guards, we cut through the National Gardens, previously the Royal Gardens. By the time we got to the square, there was already a large crowd and police blocking off the roads. This happening every Sunday at 11 must cause some traffic problems… Anyways, the event started with Karen and Michelle sneaking up to the front while Mike and I hung back and saw the procession into the ‘Unknown Soldier’ memorial area. In the meantime Mike got some photos of the local police and their nice bikes and helmets, haha.

After the conclusion of the changing, we made our way over to the Temple of Hephaistos. This temple is largely intact, so it was good to see without the massive amounts of scaffolding that is usually around it. On our way there we passed a couple of smaller sites and took some snapshots without entering them. At the Temple, after making the rounds with photos, Mike wanted to do his jump shot which turned out pretty good! Then suddenly, an employee attendant ‘security’ person came up from behind and asked to see the picture and subsequently requested that it be deleted. Oops. And of course, Mike tricked him and the picture remains. Always getting in trouble, that one.

Walking for another 20? minutes, we made it to the Panathenaic Stadium, which was back past our hostel, by the National Gardens. Unfortunately, it wasn’t part of the 12€ ticket, as we originally assumed so we paid for another ticket to get in. It came with an audio guide, so that was good, some educational info (that didn’t stick). On the grounds, there was a group of ladies practicing a routine that included branches and a small torch, olympic-related? Who knows. Anyways, since it had a nice track, we got a lot of ‘running’ shots and some fun on the podium. Whee.

By this time it was around 3 or 4pm, we went back to get some food and headed into The ‘New’ Acropolis Museum. The museum was also not included in the 12€ ticket, but we knew that already… Heading in, the architecture of the actual building is very nice and was specifically built for the pieces. As the name says, the museum tells the story of Acropolis. The numerous Parthenon’s and its surrounding area. The ground floor contained artifacts such as clay pots and sculptures found at the site. The next contained artifacts from some of the other buildings on the Acropolis, such as the Temple of Nike and the Erechtion. The top floor displayed pieces from the Parthenon. Although several pieces have been completely destroyed or still resides in the British Museum, the museum presents them in a way that illustrates how they should have looked. The main two ‘gods’ depicted in these sculptures were of Poseidon and Athena. Both being candidates when naming the city. Along the top of the Parthenon, there were several relief slabs that depicted numerous battles between centaurs, greeks, giants, etc. Actually pretty interesting, but no pictures allowed!

After finishing up with the museum, it was still pretty early, without anything else left on the agenda. So we decided to ‘wander aimlessly’. Taking a new road, jumped in and out of shops looking for souvenirs and interesting things. After grabbing some ‘Ferrero’ mini-cakes, we dropped them off at the hostel and went to dinner. (We had a lot of desserts on this trip, gelato, ice cream, cheesecakes, mmm).

A recommended restaurant, close to our hostel, we went to find Strofi. Our last dinner in Greece. Good prices, good food, good friends, good time. Of course, as the trip comes to an end we start reminiscing about the past couple days, while also getting to know each other a bit better. We talked about how each of us ended up in YSDN and how our paths could’ve changed so easily and talk about the future… *sigh

As we head back to the hostel, we start talking about the next trip 😉 Peru! Somehow, we’ll get there. Exciting.

Ferrero wasn’t bad, although not as good as Ferrero Rocher. Karen got caught in one of her laughing fits, crazy! We look through pictures and pack to head out early to catch our 11:20 flight out. Sleep.

Until next time.
